5 ways parents can
model smartphones

Your presence and undivided attention says, “You matter.” Here’s how to do that in a smartphone world.

1. Lead by example. Set a goal to limit your screen use, especially when your children are around. Adopt a “Do as I do” approach over “Do as I say.”

2. Put down the competition. Work to create better screen time habits so children don’t feel like they have to compete for your attention.

3. Practice active listening. Make eye contact and ask open-ended questions. Then repeat back what they say to show you understand.

4. Show up and engage. Attend the game, the play, or the concert. Put your phone away. Set aside 10 to 15 minutes every day for one-on-ones with each of your kids. Add it to your calendar if you must.

5. Invite their reminders. When you mess up (we all do), empower your child to remind you to put your device down. We’re all in this together. 💪
